It’s Friday, the 4th of September, 2026. 12:55pm.
My work uniform from last night’s shift is in the washing machine, and the cycle has 25 minutes left.
I start work at 18:00 tonight, so I’ll need it to be dry in time. It should be; we only got this washer/dryer a few months ago.
I’ve just done the washing-up and cleaned down the stove. The kettle’s boiled and my morning shower was lovely.
My aunt dropped round a new candle yesterday morning; it sits burning on the kitchen table in front of me. She often pops in to drop off this and that. This time it was a huge, yellow, pineapple-shaped and sized, candle. And it smells delicious. I enjoy her spontaneous pop-ins.
The kitchen window is open, and above the whirr of my laundry, I can hear the breeze playing in the leaves of our neighbour’s bay tree. Omar – he’s also our electrician. And he loves Rottweilers. He’s a nice man.
If you were to ask me which season was my favourite, I would always say autumn, or rather, “fall”. Not that I’m American, but it is an apt way of describing the changing of the seasons.
There’s something unwaveringly comforting about autumn, about these short couple of months before the long, rainy winter Britain is so known for.
There’s cinnamon in the air, and hope too. I feel very hopeful lately, and I’m sure it’s got something to do with the cooler weather.
Every shop I go into at the moment is filled with the scent and sights of Christmas already! And you know what? I’m here for it this year. It may only be September, but this summer was far too hot, and I do not like the heat. So it’s personally a welcome relief to see signs of colder times.
I’m looking forward to my next day off. I think it’s calling for a cosy day in. Me on the sofa, blankets on me, and a comfort-film marathon… Notting Hill, Love Actually, The Holliday, that kinda thing…
So, hello, autumn. It’s so nice to see you.
